How I Simplified My Wardrobe

You ever walk into your closet and think, who arranged this mess? Well, you did. But you weren’t doing yourself any favors. It could be that you have been putting away clothes quickly, not concerning yourself with whether you are putting items of similar color, function, size, or material in the same drawers or on the same shelves. Maybe you just hang up everything you own and scramble through your wardrobe like a monkey parting its way through deep and unfamiliar foliage. Whatever the case, your wardrobe could almost certainly use some simplifying, organizing, and love. Here are some tips to help you simplify and organize your wardrobe.

Don’t Wear It? Don’t Keep It.

If your closet is full of clothes you simply do not, on any occasion, wear, then that is a good place to start. You are going to want to take your least worn clothing items, be they kitschy underwear, pants that are too baggy, tight, or worn, and tops that you wouldn’t be caught dead wearing in public, and separate them from your must-haves and favorite outfit choices. Any clothing items you can, and probably should, live without, can be donated, sold, or given to a friend. After all, there are people out there who want those clothes, and you most certainly do not.

If you are struggling to cut any items loose, then you are going to want to apply cold-hearted, calculated math to the problem. Simply keep the 75% of clothes you wear the most. The other 25%, if they are not necessary special-occasion items like dresses or suits, can go by the way side. This way, you are removing emotion from the equation, and simply keeping what you wear the most and ditching the rest. This can remove a quarter of all your clutter in one fell swoop.

The more redundant items of clothing you can get rid of, the easier it will be to organize your closet and make your wardrobe work for you, rather than against you. Best of all, it will be easier to get dressed and find the clothes you actually want to wear. You will be surprised just how many outfit choices you thought were lost to the abyss of clothing you owned were just being buried, or hidden, by inferior clothing options. It’ll be like when you move houses and your kids rediscover old toys you once bought for them. They will think they’re new, and you, while knowing better, will simply laugh, sit back, and watch them enjoy themselves with their newfound discoveries.

Dress for the Season

If you are struggling to make rooms for all your jackets, coats, flannel, and thermalwear during the warmer months of the year, then there is a simple solution: a storage solution. The same goes for all your sleeveless tops, shorts you don’t use as loungewear, and other summer outfits you will not be wearing until the weather gets warmer. Simply grab all of your season-inappropriate gear and put them away where they can be retrieved at a later date. If this means moving them to your storage locker, sending them to a friend in the Southern Hemisphere, or placing them in the garage, then go do it! The newfound room you will have in your closet will be well worth the effort.

Multi-Purpose Clothing

You are going to want to have clothing items that can be worn with one another, and that can be incorporated into layered outfits. Having too many bold outfit choices that can only be worn once-in-a-blue-moon can make your wardrobe unnecessarily cluttered. Instead, simplify by getting clothing items that can be worn at different times of the year, in different ways.

Conclusion

Organizing your closet or wardrobe can be difficult. But it becomes infinitely easier when it is not convoluted and cluttered, with clothing that you never wear, or that you only wear during the coldest or hottest parts of the year. When you remove clutter, and ensure the clothes you have are multi-purpose and well-suited to your tastes and needs, then you will be able to unlock the full potential of your wardrobe. It’s time to dress to impress, and to have an easy time doing it, too. If you would like to know more about fashion, wellness, or just about anything else, feel free to check out our other blogs!
